THE Banz Rugby League Oval will undergo a major upgrade this month, thanks to funding from Jiwaka Governor Dr William Tongamp.
Tongamp and his chief executive Benny Wakpi presented a cheque of K700,000 to the representatives of Banz local-level government (LLG) on Dec 29.
The funding will be used to upgrade the venue, including the fencing and grandstand.
The project will be managed by local businessmen John Kaunga and Pastor Paul Kulung.
North Waghi district administrator John Kumie, Banz LLG president David Kumb, Banz town Lord Mayor Peter Siwi and other leaders attended the cheque presentation.
“We came up with the plan in 2015,” a representative of the group said.
“But due to funding constraints, we could not do it.
The representative said the initiative was a timely boost to give a facelift to Banz and revive rugby league.
“It will help address social problems that affect youths,” the representative said. “It will also help generate income for farmers and business houses.
“Rugby league now has good markets where young men can be promoted to the national level.
“We thank our governor for the support.”
