PORT Moresby had benefitted from the services and leadership of the late Moresby North West MP Sir Mekere Morauta and will miss him, says Moresby North East MP John Kaupa.
“As a leader in the city, he was passionate about the affairs of the city, particularly the National Capital District Commission,” he said.
“He stood on what he believed was right for good governance in the city and equal distribution of projects to residents to make Port Moresby a better and peaceful city for all.
“Sir Mekere as a senior politician provided great leadership to the NCDC as the Moresby North West MP.
“He must also be applauded for his foresight and his advisory role in our current Government.
“PNG has lost a vibrant politician and an architect of PNG economy who had contributed enormously to the nation.”
He said Sir Mekere would be remembered as a reformist during his tenure as prime minister from 1999 to 2002.
“He inherited a depressed economy and a fractured legislator.
“He embarked on fundamental reforms of the economy and political system.
“Our country has benefited from his great leadership.
“He was a champion leader who served his country well until his last breath.”
