POLICE Commissioner Gary Baki says the new barracks at Bomana will reduce the cost of accommodation for police officers during the soccer world cup in November.
He opened the new barracks adjacent to the Bomana Police College after receiving the keys from the Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Bruce Charles.
“This barracks will initially be used by the police officers brought in from other provinces to assist in the Fifa World Cup in Port Moresby,” Baki said.
It will later be used by recruits graduating from the college.
“The recruits who pass out in December will move into these barracks.”
He said they would be accommodated there before they receive their posting.
Charles said the barracks would also be used by officers from other provinces during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in 2018.
Baki said the recently opened one in Lae and the McGregor Barracks in Port Moresby.
The construction of the barracks followed a needs analysis undertaken by the Papua New Guinea-Australia Policing Partnership in 2014.
It identified a shortage of accommodation, particularly for single officers in the National Capital District and Lae.
The building materials was donated by ExxonMobil and the PNG LNG and the construction was carried out by the Red Sea Housing Service funded by the PNG-APP.
The new police barracks at Bomana cost about K4 million and has 280 beds.
