THE NCD Governor’s Cup defending champions Dekmog Bomana One could make it back-to-back titles after keeping rivals Hohola Flies scoreless 16-0 yesterday in a replay of last year’s grand final.
The Dekmog Ltd-sponsored team in their maroon colours won the game primarily through their defence which was impenetrable for the entire game on the hard and dusty Bomana oval.
Bomana One’s fullback David Karl’s double ignited the hosts and along with centre Francis Gela gave the team a handy 12-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Hohola lifted their intensity but could not build enough pressure to fine Bomana’s line.
Hohola’s frustration was Bomana’s gain as they gave away penalties through ill-discipline resulting in Bomana No.7 Rex Lei closing out the show with two successful attempts.
The defending champions face Morata Bullets in their second game this morning.
In other pool results from yesterday Moitaka One beat Bomana One 9-4, Morata Swans got over Baaz Nokondi Two 12-0, 8-Mile One edged out Hohola Flies 4-0, Kone Storms beat Barakau 7-0, Heduru Brothers pipped Gerehu United 4-0, Gordons Cyclones blew away Henz 22-10, 8-Mile Two beat Bomana Two 4-0 and Kone Storms got past Nokondi One 10-8.
The first day of the cup which attracted a sizable crowd was largely incident free apart from one isolated case of rowdy behaviour from a fan who was apparently  drunk.
Security personnel quickly intervened and got the man under control.
Tournament organisers have issued a further warning that unruly behaviour s would not be tolerated at the games.
The grand final is on Sunday after the pool play-offs and the semi-finals.
