Power lifter Tahina Booth presented a variety of sporting goods and equipment last week to the Bese Gym, a village-based fitness centre in Badihagwa, National Capital District.
The donation was part of the Grass Skirt Project, an initiative of Booth, pictured, which had been active in donating sporting equipment to various grassroots sporting communities and associations in the country.
This year the Grass Skirt Project will shift its focus to community-based sports organisations that request for assistance.
Booth wishes to promote the message of healthy living and combating gender-based violence in communities at the grassroots level.
Bese Gym founder Kila Mala thanked the Grass Skirt Project and said sporting clubs often lacked funding to purchase the correct equipment and participants could not afford the equipment and clothing required.
“We do not have adequate equipment as they are expensive, especially weights and basic training gear.
“When you want to start a community project such as a gym you will always need support with equipment and we are blessed to have revived such support.
“We have big plans for the Bese Gym this year starting with an awareness programme within the community, spreading the message of a healthy and active lifestyle. We will also focus on sporting activities for the children in the community, thanks to the donation,” Mala said.
Part Iokea (Gulf) and Australian, 33-year-old Booth said being an athlete she understood the struggle clubs faced in terms of having proper training equipment and gear.
She said sport was one pathway for young people of the country to create a better future for themselves.
