THE Port Moresby Boromas beat Lae Hammerheads 28-15 yesterday to claim this year’s Export Rugby Championship.
In a bruising encounter at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, the Boromas, in a controlled game, accounted for the Hammerheads, with superior ball-handing and kicking options.
The Hammerheads matched the Boromas in defence, muscling up on the forwards and subduing backline attacks.
With the ball in hand, the Hammerheads looked dangerous as they found space on both flanks.
However, the Morobeans could not capitalise on these chances due to handling errors.
The Hammerheads on several occasion’s created overlaps but their distribution of the ball let them down.
Hammerheads captain Clifford Vali told The National: “The handling errors cost us the game.
“We were also running out of patience, and we couldn’t control ourselves.”
The Boromas were the first to post points with a try to Freddy Andale after 15 minutes.
Extra points were added five minutes later through a penalty kick, with Boromas goal-kicker Tisa Kautu making certain he did not miss this time around, taking the Boromas lead to 8-0.
The Hammerheads managed to replay minutes later, building from the gains made by their forwards down the centre of the field.
Winger Sowei Waulas scored for the visitors.
The try was unconverted, but a successful penalty kick by the Hammerheads locked the scores at 8-all, with 15 minutes left in the first-half.
The Boromas kept their cool and were rewarded with a try to Tisa Kautu, giving them a 13-8 lead at the halftime.
The second-half continued in the same vein as the first, with the Hammerheads creating scoring opportunities only to waste them.
An early try and successful penalty kick to the Boromas extended their lead to 23-8.
Hammerheads scrumhalf Robin Loma was able to scramble over for a converted try which brought the Hammerheads within eight points of the Boromas, 23-15.
The Boromas, however, sealed the win with a late try to bring the final score to 28-15.
