POLICE in Manus have arrested and charged a man with bribing a police officer.
The suspect is Bill Paran, 48, from Tingou village in the Tetidu local level government area of Lorengau.
Acting provincial police commander Senior Inspector David Yapu said yesterday the suspect was charged last week with sexual penetration and incest.
“During the process of investigation, he offered K190 to the police investigation officer and demanded to drop his case and set him free,” Yapu said.
Yapu said the investigator, First Constable Markson Gamui, who is the officer in charge of the criminal investigation division in Lorengau, brought the matter to his attention.
The suspect was arrested and charged with bribery.
“I commend my officer for taking such a bold stand of not accepting the money and coming out to report such an illegal practice,” Yapu said.
Police officers were mandated to enforce the law justly without favour, malice or ill will, according to Yapu. “This is a classic example to expose illegal practices and corruption at the work place.”
He encouraged police officers to be honest and serve the people and the community with honesty and professionalism.
