Broken crossing making travel hard and hurting businesses

Highlands

Business and property owners, public servants, service providers and students on the western part of North Waghi district in Jiwaka are having a difficult time travelling because of a broken crossing.
A flood washed away a culvert bridge at the Bunum Wo section of the road on April 23 and the crossing has not been fixed.
Travellers between Kimil and Banz either get on vehicles that have to take the Banz-Kudjip road and come out of Kindeng-Waghi Bridge route or get dropped off on one side of the broken crossing, carry their belongings across on foot and catch another vehicle on the other side.
Peter Jim, a businessman from Bunum Wo, said it had been almost a month since the culvert bridge was washed away.
“For people who operate trade stores or PMV business between Kimil and Bunum Wo and those from Kondopina, Kinjibi, Penda, Mala, Nunga and Kotna, this is hurting their business.
“It’s almost a month now since the culvert bridge was washed away and nothing has been done to put up a new one.
“This is one of the main roads that links Dei district and North Waghi.
“We are appealing to the provincial government and the North Waghi district administration and even the national Government to rescue the people from this dilemma,” Jim said.
He has requested for an immediate response from the authorities to restore the bridge so that traffic can return to normal.
A bailey bridge is what Jim and the rest of the affected people are requesting to be put to replace the culvert bridge.
