SOUHTSIDE Brothers and QPR Colts will meet in the National Capital District Governor’s Cup final at the Kone Tigers Oval on Sunday after both sides won their semifinals yesterday.
Southside defeated Mapex Garden Hills Eagles 8-2 and last year’s runners-up Colts beat Toks Eels 20-14.
Southside halfback Stacey Kukam, who scored the only try in the match, was outstanding in his game management.
Eagles were on attack with repeat sets in Southside’s red zone 10 minutes in, but they couldn’t convert their possession into points.
With the game in the balance, Kukam threw a dummy and took the line on before scoring the winning try in the 12th minute.
Eagles kicked a penalty goal early in the second half but Southside extended their lead after they slotted home one of their own 15 minutes from fulltime.
Southside captain Stanley Robin told The National after the win that it was the belief that they had in each other which saw them reach the final.
“This is the first time we’ve competed in the Governor’s Cup,” the lock said. “We don’t have any Digicel Cup players.
“We are local and inexperienced boys but we’ve reached the final now.
“We believed that we could reach the final and we did it.
“We are the underdogs but we are determined to win the Cup for Moresby South.”
Meanwhile, Colts will be counting on Port Moresby Viper Ben Wemin and Julius Yakopa to help them go one better this year.
