Build, name uni after Sir Michael

Letters

SOMEONE recently suggested a name change to the Jackson International Airport while the Nadzab International Airport has been recommended for the same by the Morobe government.
It is good Papua New Guineans are thinking in this direction to commemorate our founding father.
When considering monuments to commemorate our leaders and their roles in history, there are certain institutions that should be carefully considered with great care and according to factual history.
For example, Sir Julius Chan deserves a landmark in appreciation for his role as the father of the PNG’s currency in Kina and Toea.
John Momis for his role in the formulation of PNG’s Constitution.
Sir Barry Holoway should be commemorated for his role in the establishment of several vital institutions including the PNG Institute of Medical Research, the National Coffee Research Institute, the University of Goroka, which was formerly the Goroka Teachers Collage and the National Sports Institute, all based in the Eastern Highlands that serves not only PNG, but the entire western Pacific.
A separate university should be constructed in Wewak, East Sepik, to commemorate the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare.
His people deserve this token of appreciation by the Government and people of PNG.

  • That university would not have any international standing.
It would make light of the Chief’s name and significance
