BUIMO prison in Lae, Morobe, is tightening its approach to the Covid-19 and has put in place strict protocols for all visitors, Correctional Services officers and prisoners to adhere to, says jail commander Chief Insp Michael Wundia.
“No one will be allowed in or out of the prison area when they do not observe strict Covid-19 protocols,” Chief Insp Wundia said.
He said he instructed staff to use masks as part of their uniform.
Chief Insp Wundia said the only threat the prison community was facing was when prisoners were brought to the prison from the police cells.
“We will ensure that convicts or remandees are properly examined or certified by medical practitioners,” he said. “Once these prisoners are moved from police cells to the prison, it is a must that they have a clearance/medical certificate to be able to be admitted into the prison compound.”
He said prisoners without medical certificates would not be allowed into the prison compound.
“They (prisoners) would be sent back to the police cells,” he said, adding that he was happy with the current adherence to Covid-19 protocols in dealing with prisoners.
