DESPITE all the negativity about Buimo Prison in Lae, Morobe, a local business continues to support the institution with hygiene products.
On Friday, Panamex Pacific assisted the prison with K5,000 worth of their products, including bath and laundry soap and bleach, to prison commander Judy Tara and her officers and witnessed by a group of male and female inmates and Panamex staff.
The donations were supposed to be presented during the Independence day celebrations on Sept 16, but due to other commitments, the presentation was delayed to last Friday.
The company plans to continue to support the prison with monthly donations as well as every Independence day.
Panamex marketing coordinator Simonta Hani said the company had been assisting Buimo prison in partnership with other organisations over the years but this year, it had donated items on its own. Hani, national sales and marketing manager Ronald Ram and other Panamex staff went to the prison to present the items.
He said for the company, it was the about being socially responsible and giving back to the community.
Ram said in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, soap and cleaning products were essential in maintaining good personal hygiene.
He said Panamex committed around 600 bars of soap for the prison as well as hygiene products for female inmates.
“We’ve given over 40 boxes worth of stock valued at around K5,000 but it doesn’t really matter how much stock we give or its value is, it’s all about helping the community,” Ram said.
