POLICE in Manus have arrested a colleague for allegedly helping a prisoner escape from the police cells last month.
Police commander Chief Insp David Yapu said Sharon Wamuni, 27, from Numangua village, Ambunti, East Sepik, was charged with aiding a prisoner to escape.
Chief Insp Lapu said the policewoman was on duty and allegedly went to the cells with the keys and opened the cellblock.
She allowed the prisoner, Job Pobress, to fetch water and he escaped.
Pobress was recently convicted for armed robbery and was jailed five years and two months with hard labour and was awaiting an escort from the Correctional Services.
Wamuni did not notify the authorities of the escape.
Chief Insp Yapu ordered an investigation which resulted in her arrest.
She is on a 21-day suspension and was scheduled to appear in the Lorengau committal court yesterday.
