WEWAK Rugby League president Alex Annis has appealed to Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) and the Northern Confederate to focus more on developing the game in rural areas.
He said competitions in Bulolo, Maprik and Vanimo had so much talent but were not affiliated to the sport’s national governing body.
“I’ve seen changes and I hope to see more rugby league development in rural areas,” Annis said at the PNGRFL annual general meeting outside Port Moresby on Saturday.
“We have to look at rural leagues that have not affiliated to PNGRFL.
“Many leagues have potential talents but are not affiliated to the governing body. Vanimo, Maprik and Bulolo have not attended the AGM because they are not affiliated.
“I am appealing to (newly-elected Northern Confederate director Robin) Iveke to work with us to develop the game.
“(Former Northern Confederate director) the late Russ Kaupa had contributed a lot in his time.
“We are happy that we finally have a replacement for him.
“Congratulations to Iveke. We look forward to working with him.”
Annis also congratulated Sandis Tsaka for being voted in as PNGRFL chairman.
He described Tsaka as being passionate about the game, adding that PNG had done well on the international stage under his leadership.
