Calls for wider consultation during crisis

THE planning for a crisis must involve all parties that would be impacted as a result of the decisions, Bankers and Financial Institution Association president Lillie Sapu says.
Sapu said the government’s decision to declare a state of emergency and the subsequent lockdown had affected essential services such as banks.
She said the biggest setback was the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) if services were going to be continued, with workers lives at risk.
“If services need to continue, all workers must have proper PPEs including bankers,” she said.
“As controls are put in place, everything must be considered – everything that impacts the lives of every individual expected to continue to work.
“The decisions surrounding their wellbeing at home must be critically analysed before they start putting controls in place.
“If we are expected to be at work, we must have markets that are supplying us with food.
“Plus our safety in getting to work.
“These are things that impact (our) lives as we go to work.”
Sapu said whatever decisions government made daily should take note of the lessons learnt.
She acknowledges all the frontline workers for their efforts.
