Central city

Letters

I REMEMBER in the 1990s or early 2000, an amount of K50 million was allocated to kick-start the construction of a Central city at Bautama.
With that amount, only three or four houses were built.
The leaders of all levels from MPs to senior public servants and LLG members have not done anything to continue the project, not even raise the issue in Parliament.
It is good to see Governor Robert Agarobe talking about the issues and other MPs should be supporting him instead of carrying briefcases for other MPs.
They should be talking and pushing the agenda with one voice.
They should be pushing to:

  • Build a domestic wharf somewhere in Central while the current wharf caters for international shipping;
  • build a domestic airport somewhere along the Magi Highway while Jackson International Airport caters for international flights only. Port Moresby will grow in the next 20-50 years and because there is limited space, it is likely that a second airport will be needed; and,
  • Build a provincial hospital, provincial police station, provincial and national courts and provincial government/administration office complex.

All these will give Central a sense of identity and a source of revenue.
