THE Gateway Children’s Fund (PNG) is appealing again to the kind-hearted to support its school in Moitaka which provides free education to more than 250 disadvantaged children.
It is inviting entries for its annual fundraiser at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club on Oct 11.
Proceeds from the event will not only help fund the Gateway Christian School but also provide food and healthcare to the children.
Chairman Pastor Rick Paynter said the event had become a favourite on the local golfing calendar, attracting teams from businesses and corporations across the city.
Joining golfers this year is PNG swim champion and four-time Olympian Ryan Pini, pictured.
Also attending is Jason Smith who represented Australia at two Olympics in basketball and is a Commonwealth Games gold medalist. Australian tri-athlete Ricky Bolmers rounds out the team of sporting champions.
Preceding the golf will be the chairman’s dinner at Holiday Inn where the three sportsmen will share with the guests memorable stories from their careers.
Speaking in Port Moresby this week, Pini said: “Educating children is important and I am looking forward to adding value to the efforts of this charity.”
Smith said: “The Gateway Children’s Fund is a first-class, grassroots NGO that I am proud to be associated with. This will be my fifth trip and I love being here to help such a great cause.”
Each team will comprise four players and all will receive a prize at day’s end.
In addition, K4,000 awaits the first person to score an ace on the fifth hole.
The charity hopes to raise K100,000 to improve facilities at the school, which receives no government funding, but depends on private donations and corporate grants. Sponsors include IHG Holiday Inn, The Sir Brian Bell Foundation, Steamships and Ela Motors Toyota.
Paynter thanked all the sponsors for their donations and support.
He hoped every local business would consider entering a team.
“It’s a fun day that helps kids and families in PNG escape the cycle of poverty,” he said.
