THE people of Moresby North West should elect a leader who will continue the legacy of Sir Mekere Morauta, says coordinator Eddie Saunders.
Saunders, who worked with the late Sir Mekere as one of his coordinators, said the leader should be selfless for PNG and fight against corruption.
He appealed to the people to vote for a candidate who had the integrity, intellect, experience and character that Sir Mekere showed.
“Elect someone who is like Sir Mekere and one who can continue his legacy, who is selfless for PNG, fights against corruption, is honest with transparent management and leadership qualities,” he said.
Saunders urged voters to choose their next leader wisely.
“Personally, I have worked with other coordinators during the term of Sir Mekere and hence his network,” he said.
“I would like to thank all the coordinators, families, supporters, who have hepled returned Sir Mek for the four terms he had been member for Moresby North West and prime minister.”
Sir Mekere won the seat in 1997 and successfully contested it during 2002, 2007, and 2017 national elections.
He died in Brisbane on Dec 19 and was accorded a state funeral on Friday.
He was laid to rest on Independence Hill, Port Moresby.
A by-election to fill the Moresby North West vacant seat is set for February or March.
Acting electoral commissioner Simon Sinai said a date would be announced soon.
