A CLAN in Jiwaka lost all its properties, including houses and vehicles worth a lot of money, has decided not to take the law into its own hands but make peace with their rivals.
Members of the Epini clan, from Muk village, gathered on Sunday and decided not to retaliate against the rival Rungi tribe.
Epini clan members lost properties and homes after a killing took place over an extra marital affair last month.
The incident took place at Kuming village in the Anglimp-South Waghi electorate.
Epini ward councillor Peter Saina claimed that his people lost 32 permanent houses, 27 semi-permanent houses, 164 bush-material houses, 15 trade stores with goods in them and four vehicles.
Two men from the Epini clan were also injured.
He said this was over something among three people but the innocent population were affected.
Saina said one of his clansman was at home that night, with his wife after she received a missed call from a man from the Rungi tribe.
He said the woman was threatened by the husband to call the man to meet her at certain location.
Saina said while the victim was near, the husband of the woman and two others jumped out from their hiding and killed him on the spot.
Saina condemned the killing and wanted the law to take its cause.
“This killing was unbecoming and we are sorry for what has happened and willing to pay compensation for the death,” he said.
Saina said he respected the leadership of Governor Dr William Tongamp and local MP Joe Kuli and wanted to compensate for the death.
“I condemn the killing and my people are looking forward to accepting any compensation demands.”
He said tribal fighting nowadays was not the answer.
“We will not have anything to talk over our properties,” Saina said.
“All we want to do is to say sorry for what has happened.”
He said maintaining peace was the way forward for peaceful living.
Saina added that four people, including the woman allegedly involved and her husband, had been handed over to police and were in custody.

  • Saina your leadership is admirable, a lot can learn a lot from your leadership, hard to make top decisions like, top decisions at critical times like what has been done are heroes, The Good Lord admires such leadership, the Lord bless you in the next level of leadership & the community at large…….

  • Saina, salute your leadership…. hats off… This is the way forward… Blessings flow when there is peace… Credit to your clansmen for they respect your leadership… Today’s generation need such leaders in all levels. May God be continue to be with you and comfort… It is always better to analyse the problem before retaliate. Most innocent are homeless now because of these four. PNG will take decades to fully change with such attitudes.
