MEMBERS of the Mendi Valley (golf) Club in Mendi, Southern Highlands, are looking forward to reopening the club after it was shut down following a liquor ban in 2015 and the 2017 political impasse.
The club used to be the only meeting place and recreation venue in the past for the province’s expatriate community.
Fayne Kunjip said in November 1999, there was a handover ceremony by the members of the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) unit called the 12 Chief Engineers (12CE) Works Unit to the honouree members of the club.
The 12CE Works Unit had managed the provincial Department of Works since 1970.
He said in the past years, the club situated in the heart of Mendi town, was patronised by the small expatriate community who were mostly missionaries, 12CE Works Unit engineers and their families and other visitors.
“We currently have 44 members and a few of them are based in Mendi,” Kunjip said.
“We would like others that are in other parts of the country to come together for an annual general meeting anytime this month.
“Since law and order issues have dropped, we need to open the doors once again for public servants and their families.”
