PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) competition manager Toksy Nema has commended 44 participants who attended phase one of a coaching course at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
This is the level-one PNGRFL NRL international games coaching course conducted by NRL’s David Westley and assisted by PNG Orchids captain Cathy Neap, a certified coach.
Nema said of the 44 participants who attended the two-day course earlier this week, 11 were women.
“This will be followed by Central on March 22-23 (yesterday and today) at Kwikila in Rigo,” he said.
“This should attract another big turnout, with some from along the Aroma Coast who are looking to improve their nines competition.
“We are going through phase one in March, phase two in June and phase three in September with all participants throughout the country to attain their level-one coaching certificate as qualified coaches.”
He said the Port Moresby leg of the course produced the highest turnout at any course by PNGRFL.
“PNGRL promotes and encourages women’s involvement as it supports on gender equality. It also discourages violence against women and girls in the community,” Nema said.
“This is where we should start from to up-skill our coaches and trainers.”
Southern Confederate director Gwaibo Mairi said this was a way forward to help develop the sport.
“I thank South Pacific Brewery for their support, Westley for facilitating the course, and PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka and Toksy Nema for ensuring that the course is conducted in National Capital District and Central,” he said.
