Community gives up robbery suspects

POLICE cannot carry out their duties effectively if members of the community do not cooperate, a police commander says.
East New Britain police commander Senior Inspector Joseph Tabali said this last week following the surrender of two wanted people on Saturday.
Kokopo Mayor Divia Kopman and community leaders from Ulagunan village handed over the suspects to police.
Albert Tommy, 23, and Samuel Anton, 24, both from Ulagunan, were alleged to have been involved in a number of armed robberies in the town.
“I thank the Kokopo town mayor and the leaders of Ulagunan for handing over the suspects,” Tabali said. “Law and order is everyone’s business. The community must work with police to address law and order issues. We can achieve a lot if we work together.”
Tabali said a police special operation launched last month to counter an increase in armed robberies was going well. He appealed to members of the community who know of criminals hiding in their community to hand them over to police.
He said criminals should not be allowed to roam freely in the community because they were a threat to peace and security.
