K2.5 million has been paid as the first instalment to NC Civil Works for the upgrade of the Iokea-Sepoe Road in Gulf.
The cheque was presented to company owner Nick Constantinou in Port Moresby by Gulf administrator Marc Orisuru Avai, witnessed by Governor Chris Haiveta.
Haiveta said the contract was signed but lack of funding had delayed development rants.
“Iokea road has been funded several times in the past but mostly for grubbing and patching of the dirt road,” he said.
“This time the road will be fully upgraded and re-gravelled with proper drainage, culverting as well as sealing.
“It will also extend to Waima and Kivori villages. Iokea is the biggest village in the Eastern side of the province, home to one of the earliest mission establishments which provided basic education and primary healthcare to many people in the pre-independence days.”
Haiveta said the contract would also upgrade road to Sepoe, Rove, Mavara and Sarota villages.
All these communities have potential for ecotourism, cattle ranching and tapioca farming.
He said local contractor Kana Constructions was initially engaged to do the Ihu-Petoe for the construction of two bridges linking the land mass.
He said the bridges at Kakoa and Keuru had been completed, next year will see the grading and grubbing of the road.
