Court dismisses petition against election of MP

The Waigani National Court has dismissed an election petition challenging the win of Kerema Open MP Richard Mendani in the 2017 general election.
Justice Danajo Koeget dismissed the petition on Friday because the petitioner failed to provide enough evidence on the allegations of bribery and undue influence.
The petition was filed by Thomas Opa, a losing candidate in the last general election.
Justice Koeget said there was no evidence presented in court to dispute the election result.
Mendani told reporters outside court that he can now focus on delivering projects to his electorate.
Petitioner Opa said it has been a long 18 months in court.
“Although the court mentioned there were other avenues to pursue the case,” he said.
“I decide to leave the case as it is and focus on spending more time with my family.
“But come 2022, I should be back to contest the seat again.”
