THE Lae Committal Court on Friday granted a man, charged with cheating, a K3,000 bail and his two guarantors had to pay K200 each.
Senior Magistrate Pious Tapil told the two guarantors to ensure the defendant attended all court dates set and ensure that bail conditions were strictly observed by him.
Liam Nalu, 26, from Yanga village, Lae, Morobe, made his first appearance after he was alleged to have fraudulently promised to sell his property (land) at 9-Mile Nasfund Estate to Jackson Savi for K100,000.
The police summary of facts before the court alleged that in 2017, Nalu met with Savi and informed him that he was trying to sell his late father’s property at Nasfund Estate.
After an agreement was made for Savi to pay K100,000 to Nalu, the defendant started asking the complainant sums of money ranging from K200 to K2,000.
Police said when Nalu received the money on numerous occasions, he used to inform Savi that those amounts would be subtracted from the cost of the land.
The court also heard that the total amount of money received by Nalu was K61,000 – between Jan 2018 and Dec 2019.
It was understood that despite receiving the money, Nalu did not sort out land documents to transfer the title to Savi, despite promising to do so.
In 2019, police alleged that Nalu sold the land to another person without Savi’s knowledge and went into hiding. The matter was reported to police and Nalu was arrested and charged.
Magistrate Tapil fixed Nalu’s next appearance for Feb 2 for mention.
