A MAN who obtained K3,400 by false pretences has been told to pay K4,000 and be on good behaviour for two years.
Mount Hagen District Court Magistrate Betty Jacob ordered Polly Gali, from Dei, to pay the first instalment of K1,000 to Simon Tibe, by the end of the month.
Gali should pay the remaining K3,000 by the end of February.
Magistrate Jacob had imposed a jail term of one year, but suspended it on the condition that he repaid the money with K600 interest.
Gali will remain in custody until he repays the full amount.
Gali, who was based in Madang, promised to send Tibe bags of betel nuts after he sent him some money last year.
Tibe deposited K3,400 into Gali’s bank account but the latter did not send him the betel nuts.
Gali refused to answer Tibe’s calls.
Prosecutor Anna Korada told the court that Gali went into hiding but was arrested on Jan 13, at the Kaiwe betel nut market, outside Mt Hagen.
