COWBOYS claimed the Aiya Rugby Peace Cup with a 6-2 win over Raiders in the grand final at Usa village in Kagua-Erave, Southern Highlands, yesterday.
Competition president Rodney Peawi took the initiative to establish the Cup.
Aiya local-level government (LLG) area youths are using sports to make peace among themselves after a tribal fight that claimed the lives of 30 people, and government services and properties destroyed.
Grand final attendee Alex Awesa, a peace-maker from Kiburu village, Imbonggu, said other LLGs in the province should follow the approach.
He said sports unified clans and tribes.
“I will support the league every year,” Awesa said.
“Rugby league is the favourite sport of PNG.
“We have talented youths who need to be exposed.
“But they must play in an orderly manner by following the rules.”
