CITY Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Group renewed its partnership with Port Moresby Netball Association club Rebels on Tuesday.
CPL Foundation chairman Sir Mahesh Patel said the partnership, through their retailer’s charitable arm, would support the Rebels through a sponsorship deal that covered equipment and administrative costs of the club.
“CPL and Rebels have partnered for more than 25years since the early 1990s,” he said.
“The Coronavirus pandemic hit not only on the health and economics side, but also the sports and recreation aspects of lives around the world.
“So we have not been able to support these avenues that build communities.”
Sir Mahesh said the Rebels were long-time partners of CPL Group’s community obligations to sports.
He said the foundation was proud to support and continue the empowerment of women through sports. Sir Mahesh said the long-time sponsorship had produced upcoming talents who represented the National Capital District and Papua New Guinea on the international stage.
He said some national sports heroes were Barbara Penrose Stubbings, Veronica Weiang Marinama Maha, Lua Rikis and Winnie Mavara, and coaches Emily Taule, Jan Waddy, Oti Sarufa and Helen Edwards. Meanwhile, Rebels head coach Sarufa thanked the foundation and said they were committed to promoting discipline and commitment among players at the club.
“We have seen other places in PNG and the world,” she said.
“I have coached young women, and seen them develop into assets for their communities.”
