Cricket PNG considering international friendlies abroad

WITH the likelihood of no home matches against touring sides this year for the Papua New Guinean men’s and women’s cricket teams, Cricket PNG (CPNG) will be looking at options of having several international friendlies either in India or Australia.
CPNG chief executive Greg Campbell said it was important the men’s national side had a few friendlies ahead of their T20 World Cup campaign in November with the International Cricket Council to approve the matches.
“There are options for that, the ICC have already got two or three practice games for us,” he said.
“We’re also trying to get to India two or three weeks before the start of the world cup and play some more games.
“We’re setting that up and there’s nothing confirmed at the moment because as you know, India has started the IPL (Indian Premier League) and everything that will be talked about is the IPL and not the world cup.
“We’re also looking to go into Australia if we can. We know that’s going to be a big hurdle but we’re making little inroads to get our team into Australia later in the year.”
Meanwhile, Campbell commended the men’s and women’s teams for their commitment to their training despite an inactive 2020 with players continuing their training in isolation.
