IT is important that people seek medical care if they have problems associated with lack of food, World Health Organisation (WHO) epidemiologist Dr Boris Pavlin says.

He said one of the main problems was the lack of sufficient nutritious food following the drought.

“Even if an area receives as much rain as it needs today, there will still be several months before all the food crops are ready for harvest,” Palvin said. “I want to stress the fact that even if there has been more rain, it does not mean they were by any means out of the woods.

“There may be rain in some places, in fact it’s now leading to problems such as landslides and bridge closures and things like that and in some places the rains haven’t even fully resumed back to their normal levels.”

He said food security issues continued and with that came the health effects of malnutrition as well as the previously mentioned effects of sanitation and hygiene associated with insufficient clean water.

“We’re working closely with our nutrition colleagues to look out for the specific micro nutrient needs.”
