Cultural practice vital: Teacher

LITERACY is not only about reading and writing but also about teaching the younger generation to maintain cultural and traditional practices, head teacher Christine T’suga says.
She is head teacher of St Therese Primary School in Port Moresby.
“We are using this occasion as parents and teachers to teach and train our children to be literate about their different traditional dances.”
She said the impact of western influence should make it more urgent and important to teach children the values of different cultural practices.
She said the closing of the Literacy Week coincided with the cultural show and the independence celebration in which students showcased the traditional dances of the 22 provinces.
