THE Okapa district development authority (DDA) in Eastern Highlands has purchased machines to improve roads in the district.
DDA chairman and Okapa MP, Saki Soloma, who is also the Minister for Defence was in Lae with other district representatives to purchase the machines .
He said for the last 45 years, most parts of the district were under-developed in terms of road access.
“The district roads have deteriorated over the years and it is very difficult for vehicles to pass through,” Soloma said.
He said the majority of the people in Okapa were into agriculture with a lot of fresh produce as well as cash crops such as coffee but due to road access, the produce could not be delivered in time.
“People in Okapa have been denied this service for too long and today marks the dawning of a new era where these machines will open up roads,” Soloma said.
The DDA purchased three excavators and a bulldozer for K2,172,500 million from the district support improvement programme funds.
He said poor roads was a challenge for many public servants in the districts to commute to work.
