POLICE say the student who died on Saturday night at the University of Technology campus in Lae was attacked with knives inside his room.
Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie said the first-year Surveying and Land Studies student had just returned to the Taraka campus from his home in Mendi, Southern Highlands. He had gone there about two weeks ago following a fight between Unitech students from Enga and Southern Highlands.
Wagambie said he was killed around 10pm at the first-year male students’ dormitory. “The deceased had just returned to Lae to attend classes,” Wagambie said.
Wagambie said in a space of a few minutes, the group of men burned down the students’ mess, the home of the Student Representative Council president, the Department of Distance and Open Learning building and the ATCDI building.
“Police units based within the campus were alerted and tried to stop the marauding people but were outnumbered,” he said.
Wagambie said no shots were fired. There was poor visibility and rain. They were also told that the men were carrying guns.
