THE Department of Youth, Religion and Community Development has praised The National for its coverage of a children’s forum last month to commemorate the International Children’s Day.
“The main platform for us is the media,” department Secretary Anna Solomon said.
She hosted a dinner for journalists where seven media awards were presented.
Solomon said selecting the winners was tough given the in-depth reporting and consistency in reporting to promote polices of the department.
The department set up its media unit this year and has created a good relationship with the mainstream media, resulting in the good publicity of the department’s programmes.
“And for the first time in 2018, we’ve got a good budget – I believe because of the media,” Solomon said.
“You were not only reporting issues affecting families and communities but also showcasing that there was a department which is actually working.”
Solomon said the department would continue this good relationship with the media next year.
The National reporter Peter Esila received the minister’s choice for best reporter.
Hennah Joku of Digicel’s TvWan received the women’s award.
The National Broadcasting Corporation had the best coverage for disabilities and most inclusive media organisation. Its reporter Kabua Momo received the secretary’s choice for best reporter.
