Digicel Cup franchises recruit talents in Governor’s Cup

THE National Capital District Governor’s Cup has again established itself as one of the leading offseason talent pools with organisers noting an increased interest from Digicel Cup franchises.
Tournament director Simon Nuabo said the interest from franchises during the festive season event had already seen a handful of players been asked to trial for Digicel Cup sides ahead of the upcoming season.
The two confirmed players from the tournament are QPR Colts’ Sydney Koi and Dei Hunters’ Johnson Peter.
“We’ve had Hela Wigmen coach Charlie Wabo, and the Port Moresby Vipers’ and Kimbe Cutters’ coaching staff express their interest in taking players,” he told The National.
“That’s a positive thing for the tournament.
“They’ve been monitoring and following up with teams and players throughout the tournament.
“We’ve already seen two players picked up to trial with the Cutters and that’s what we want from the tournament.
“This is the whole idea of having such a tournament and that’s to create an avenue for players and teams to showcase their talents.
“We have a lot of talents in the city but it’s a matter of creating opportunities for them to shine.”
Nuabo said the level of discipline from teams was a concern as it was important in developing players.
He said player discipline starts in tournaments such as the Governors Cup.
“So when players reach the top level, they know what to do on and off the field,” he said.
“Discipline is always an issue that affects the game at all levels, so we try to encourage teams to practise it while at the club level.”
