Disaster centre to work with communities

THE Natural Disaster Centre will be working with people in disaster-prone areas to prepare and mitigate the impacts of disaster, emergency and disaster management national project officer Simon Kafu says.
Kafu said provincial disaster officers would provide training and awareness to the disaster prone communities to mitigate the risk of disasters throughout the country.
“Most disaster-prone communities have been affected by natural disaster due to climate change, but they don’t know how to prepare and manage its impact,” he said.
During a capacity building training between the International Organisation for Migration and disaster centre in Port Moresby yesterday, Kafu said people would know how to predict and manage disasters.
He said the training covered the community-based disaster risk reduction management and build back safer-supporting safe shelter construction for provincial disaster officers to work with communities to manage the impact of natural disaster and climate change.
“The trainers will provide awareness and training for the people to understand the risk and assess their venerability to make decision to manage the risk,” he said.
