The PNG Hunters suffered their second home defeat of the season when they lost 28-20 to the Redcliffe Dolphins at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
Dolphins’ captain Cameron Cullen led his team to a great start by scoring a try in the first four minutes.
The try saw Hunters turning up the heat on the Dolphins to allow Junior Rau to cross over for a try in the 12th minute.
The Dolphins, not to be intimidated by 6400-plus home fans, hit back through Tony Tumusa to open up a six-point lead.
But the Hunters, desperate to keep up with the Dolphins, scored back-to-back tries through Adex Wera and Watson Boas to head to a break with a 14-12 lead.
The second half saw Dolphins stepping up their attack to score two more tries, and Hunters winger Brendon Gotuno scored one.
With the match hanging in the balance, Dolphins’ Sam Anderson crossed over in the final 10 minutes to break the Hunters’ hearts.
Despite the defeat, coach Michael Marum said the Hunters remained optimistic of making the top six.
“The Hunters still have a chance to make it into the top six, but we still have a lot things to work on,” he said.
“We just have to be honest with our training and try to win our remaining matches.”
Results: Dolphins 28 (Cameron Cullen, Tony Tumusa, Josh Beehag, Sam Anderson, Tom Geraghty tires; Bryce Donovan 4 con). Hunters 20 (Junior Rau, Adex Wera, Watson Boas, Brendon Gutuno tires; Ase Boas 2 con).
