Duties contradicting

Letters

POLICE reservist officers at the Gordon police station executing duties are contradicting to their assigned duties.
While Gordon market or bus stop areas are filled with drunkards or thugs who pickpocket, snatch bags and mobile phones and harass females, these so called reservist including other well trained officers bypass them and arrest vulnerable people who are selling items like sewn clothes and others apart from betel nut for their living.
We know the street vending has been restricted by NCDC but due to the prolonging of the construction of that new market, these people have to look for means and ways to gain something for their existence in this very expensive city.
The only problem they have is with the increasing number of thugs who become threat to the public.
These so-called officers with the pride and strength of the uniform they wear, seize defenceless people and force them into the vehicle or the station and demand for K10 or K20 for their release.
If they can’t meet their demand, they are sent to Boroko where they bail themselves with K300 which is another huge financial burden for them.
These little K10 and K20 are what they are selling to gain for their living but with the fear of going to Boroko, they offer them what they demand.
It is another corrupt practice existing there and these so called reservist are living their daily lives on such practices.
The police station commander should discipline his officers there to make sure they execute their duties boldly by arresting those
thugs who intimidate the normal flow of public in these areas rather than feeding on vulnerable people selling little things for the days meet.
Monitor the thugs there so people can walk freely without fear or any intimidation.
