THE Electoral Commission is looking at online voter registration for those with internet access as the electoral roll updating exercise started last weekend in Milne Bay.
Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato said that yesterday when updating electoral roll progress.
“I’m looking at the possibility of doing online registration,” he told The National.
“I’ve instructed my IT people to start working on the computer system to factor in online voter registration so that people, especially the working class who have access to Internet, can register online.
“We are now working towards establishing that facility.
“I’m hoping that we can have it up and running by next month.
“I’ve asked my people to have a look at the policies and regulations in regards to voter registration so that we can post the enrolment forms online.
“There are a lot of people with access to internet through mobile phones, so if we do that, we can capture a lot of people in the urban areas.
“For the rural areas, we will still use the manual enrolment forms.”
Meanwhile, voter registration started in Milne Bay last weekend with training as officers began collecting names.
Today, voter registration for Central will be launched in Rigo and the national voter registration programme will also be launched.
Gamato said next in line would be Kokopo in East New Britain.
