ECUADORIAN footballers Gustine Icasa and Abdias Aguirre arrived in the country on Wednesday to link up with defending champions Lae City for their domestic and regional campaigns.
Nineteen-year-old striker Icasa and Aquirre arrived from Brisbane and transited to the Morobe capital to join their new team for the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League and the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League.
The pair are a chance of making their debut for City tomorrow when the five-time champions meet Morobe United in the second match of a double-header at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium (3pm kick-off).
The other match will see former NSL champions Hekari United taking on Morobe Wawens in the first game (1pm kick-off). Speaking through interpreter Linda Holloway, Icasa and Aquirre said they were excited to be in a new environment and that they were looking forward to helping City in their title defence.
Aguirre played professional football with some clubs in South America but this was his first time to leave the continent to come to Papua New Guinea. The pair said they were also aiming to help City be competitive in the Champions League next month.
Lae Biscuit Company representative Joe Kramer, who was at the airport to welcome the pair, said he was hoping City coach Peter Gunemba would field the Ecuadorians against Morobe United this weekend.
