Electoral issues in NCD a disgrace

Letters

THE ongoing electoral issues being experienced by voters already only days into the process are a disgraceful example of how badly the planning for this election has been.
Not only has the Electoral Commission (EC) had five years to prepare for this process, it has taken money from foreign governments and agencies to help make sure it happens.
Yet, this is our biggest election mess for some years.
The National Capital District polling issues in our capital city, the home of our government and the EC would be some of the worst.
Thousands of voters missing off the roll before we start.
And now the commentators tell us to register early.
This should have been the discussion in 2020.
The date was moved from Monday to Wednesday.
Then yesterday, when polling is due to commence, it gets moved again while people are lining up to vote.
There is no organisation in Papua New Guinea that could do a worse job of their one responsibility other than PNG Power Ltd.
How can our leaders accept such incompetence?
Why can this commission make such a mess of this.
The impact to the electoral process, the impact to our people, the impact on businesses and the lack of productivity by government has all continued to drag our country down.
Now we will all have questions about the accuracy of the poll.
The government workers are already resting while they wait to see who their minister is.
They took Wednesday off to vote which should only take one hour.
Then they take Friday off again.
No wonder we are going backwards.
Our country is a laughing stock.
How can anyone take us seriously?
We put our hands out for just about everything and deliver nothing for it.
Our Electoral Commission has pushed our reputation as a nation further into the sewer.
We wonder why we have violence in our streets but our people are frustrated.
We want to cast our vote.
We want the process to be transparent and fair.
But we can’t even nominate a day to vote and have everything in place to do this which leads to big problems.
Where are our leaders during this mess?
They are all too concerned about getting re-elected.
When we get through this election the PNG Electoral Commission needs to be fully overhauled.
Move to digital voting, cast votes on the same day across the country and stop all this mess.
