Elementary schools moving out

Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra says by 2020, elementary schools will be phased out of primary school campuses.
Kombra said once the standard-based education curriculum was fully implemented by 2020, this level of education would be out of the primary school.
“We will have the grades one to six in the primary school,” he said.
“The elementary education will be separated where the pre-school will be operating away from the primary school campus. The new curriculum is trying to set a standard where bench marks are set.
“Students’ performances are measured according to the bench marks before they move into next grade or level.”
Kombra said by 2020 all teachers should be proficient in the new system.
“So far, we have a total of 58,000 teachers in the country and about 20,000 are elementary teachers,” he said. “These teachers are already implementing the standard-based education since 2016 after their training was conducted in 2015.”
Senior school inspector basic education Elizabeth Kosi said the current national in-service training for primary school teachers on standard-based education was open to all teachers from elementary up to grade 8.
Chairman of the National Capital District secondary schools in-service training committee Richard Lerori said the phase out would see grades 7 and 8 moved to secondary schools.
He said Tokarara and Kilakila secondary schools had already done this.
