East New Britain police commander Chief Insp Januarius Vosivai has appealed to two prime suspects in the Kabagab primary school arson case in Kokopo’s Raluana local level government to voluntarily surrender to police.
The suspects had been accused of instigating fights between Tinganalom, Ravat and Ngatur people that led to the burning of Kabagab primary school. Vosivai said police were aware of their whereabouts but they wanted them to voluntarily surrender.
“I am appealing to the community leaders where the suspects come from, especially Ravat and Kunakunai, to bring them to police so they can be arrested and charged,” she said.
“The suspects are wanted for serious crimes and the burning of a whole school is a serious matter and for community leaders to allow them to move around freely and cause problems is not good.
“They need to bring the suspects to the police.”
“In another police report, police constables attached to the Kokopo police public safety unit were arrested and charged with manslaughter and were detained at Kokopo police cell awaiting court appearance.
“The suspects, while on night duty patrol, picked up a drunk young man at Vunapope roundabout.
“They put him at the back of the police van.
“He fell off the vehicle without their notice.
“The man’s body was later found at a road side.”
Vosivai said this was police negligent.
He said after they had picked up the suspect, they should have taken him to the station or checked the door of the vehicle before driving out.
Vosivai said an investigation into the matter was continuing.
