POLICE have begun investigations into the suspicious death of a young man in Kerema last Sunday evening, an official says.
Gulf police Commander Chief Insp Jeffery Lemb said the victim Kamai Morito, believed to be in his mid-30s from Kikori, was found dead in his home.
“We were informed by the victim’s relatives after they discovered that he was not moving and we made an attempt to investigate that evening,” he said.
It was alleged that the victim, who was involved in informal marketing for a living, was last seen last Saturday heavily intoxicated by locals in town.
The following day, the victim’s relatives were worried when he did not show up and they went looking for him.
Lemb said they discovered him asleep with his face down in his room.
He said when they tried to wake him up they noticed that he had cold feet.
They then informed the police personnel who were in town for the election security operations.
“We had a doctor visiting the crime scene after we were informed and the doctor found alcohol in his system which allegedly caused internal bleeding,” he said.
Lemb said investigating officers were currently conducting interviews and collecting witness statements from the relatives and neighbours who had last seen the victim before his death.
A post mortem would also be conducted later this week to establish the actual cause of death.
