Enga celebrates New Year in peace: Police

Enga had peaceful New Year celebrations, says police commander Joseph Tondop.
He said people had taken ownership to stay away from doing bad things.
Tondop said there were no reports of tribal fighting, drug abuse and illegal road blocks during the festive season.
He said that did not mean that people were not drinking.
“People were celebrating the New Year with alcohol, but they were confined in their own areas without disturbing others,” Tondop said.
“All preferred peace and quiet family time.”
Tomba said the Highlands Highway from Tomba in Western Highlands to Porgera in Enga was free of trouble.
“The change was largely through community mobilisation, and massive awareness and education on issues affecting the communities executed since last September,” he said.
“People have developed respect for each other and also want to respect the rule of law and the work of police.
“This was evident when welcoming 2019.”
