THIRD-year students from the Department of Civil Engineering at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology went on their field trip to visit engineering projects in Lae city, Morobe, last week.
The excursion is held annually during the mid-study break in the second semester under their academic programme to give them hands-on experience in civil engineering projects.
The excursion started on Monday and was completed on Wednesday.
Students took time to visit one of the leading road construction companies, Shorncliffe (PNG) Ltd, followed by East West (1) Ltd on Monday. They visited the Lae City Council engineering division as well.
Other companies the students visited included PNG Ready Mix, Taehyo cement factory, PNG Ports Corporation and Water PNG.
Field trip coordinators Jedges Kasadimi and Peter Pia said the visits were part of academic curriculum that students undertook for practical learning in the industry.
Kasadimi said it gave the students valuable hands-on experience.
“We usually have the trip every year for students to have exposure to the real civil engineering works, industries, construction sites and government departments where they do civil engineering-related jobs,” Pia said.
The coordinators said students were proud to see and learn civil engineering works in the field as it improve their learning at the university.
The students learned different types of equipment, machinery, construction methods, design parameters, procurement and documentation processes which will help in their study.
At the Lae city council, they learnt city management and regulatory acts in city planning and extensions, solid waste collection and management and business activities.
