THE opening of the 2014 legal year in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands, took place yesterday at the Wesleyan Church.

A traditional singing group from Alotau and the Baisu Seventh-Day Adventist band led judges, magistrates, lawyers and police officers to the church for the official opening service.

Mt Hagen resident judge Justice Allen David, Justice Goodwin Poole and Justice Kewei Kawi-iu attended.

Western highlands provincial police commander Supt Martin Lakari, Baisu jail commander Supt Kauga Timbi joined the judges and lawyers.

Justice Allen David said it was a new beginning and everyone must cooperate to make the law become effective.

David said to strengthen the law, community leaders had a role.

“We all must play our part to protect the constitution. Lawyers have a part to play by bringing your clients to court when a case is going on,” David said.
