AN ex-convict has welcomed the death penalty as an effective way of minimising serious crime.

Nathan Manda, infamously known as Mosbi Mero in the world of crime here, said criminals were human beings and would seriously consider the value of their lives which came first.

He said his group of youths in Madang say “amen to this law” and urged young people in the country to surrender their lives to God and stop committing crimes.

“Let’s leave our guns and take up spades,” he said.

He, however, called on the Government to provide incentives for the unemployed so that they keep themselves occupied.

He also said the law must not apply to people who were convicted prior to its passing.

He said only new cases of crimes committed under this law should be considered.

“A man who rapes a 10-year-old girl should not be given any chance. He should be crucified,” Manda said.
