A MAGISTRATE has ordered a Bangladesh man who is married to a local woman to be deported after serving a six-month prison term for illegally staying here.

Magistrate Nasaling Bingtau yesterday found Nayan Ahamed guilty of staying in the country without a valid passport and visa contravening Section 16 (1)(a) of the Migration Act in Lae District Court.

He jailed Ahamed six months for the offence and ordered him to be deported immediately after completing the jail term.

Nayan, 28, originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh, is married to a local woman who is five months pregnant.

Ahamed, who was on a K5,000 bail, was picked up by members of the Task Force Rausim Alien on April 17 at Bumayong in Morobe.

Defence lawyer Emmanuel Mambei told the court that Ahamed had a valid visa and passport but the documents had been stolen.

Mambei said his client wanted to remain in the country to look after his wife and child.

Bingtau refused to believe Ahamed’s story saying he had not made any attempt to renew his passport and visa despite knowing that they had been stolen.

Bingtau said Ahamed did not get married the right way and could not use it as an excuse to stay in the country.

“We already have too many problems in PNG. If you want to come here you must follow the laws.”
