Firemen stop fire from spreading

QUICK action by firefighters in Port Moresby on Wednesday stopped fire which was engulfing a home from reaching eight National Housing Commission flats nearby at Gordon in Port Moresby.
The home was reportedly set alight by relatives of a man who they claimed was robbed earlier by a group of men, including the owner of the home.
The relatives had warned the suspects to pay back what they had stolen by noon Wednesday, but they failed to do so. So they set on fire the home of one them.
Waigani fire station commander Supt Arefeae Farapo confirmed that the fire was started by the angry relatives of the robbery victim.
“When they returned at around 2pm (Wed) and did not find the suspects, the relatives located one of the suspects’ makeshift shelter behind the commission flats and torched it along with three other makeshift structures,” Supt Farapo said.
Because the fire was close to the flats, firefighters from the Waigani fire station were called in to contain it.
Supt Farapo said more properties would have been destroyed if the fire had reached the housing commission flats.
He urged people not to set fire to properties near densely populated areas or close to buildings.
“Arson is a serious offence and an offender can be fined or face jail time.
“Avoid such practices because we live in a city,” he said.

  • Those angry relatives must be dealt with appropriately. Even though you have your grievances, there are proper channels to go through to seek proper resolutions. Resorting to acts wont help your cause, it will only make matters worse for yourself.

  • Primitive stone aged relatives? show them the acceptable justice in place from their jungle justice

  • We need proper education in PNG to educate all people of this nation from the remote areas to cities/towns. Leaders neglect remote areas and eventually the remote will come to cities and you will harvest the remote mentality.

  • Government needs to setup more adult phonic schools in the remote areas across the country for such person like that to be educated enough to avoid silly mistake like that when they migrate to cities and town.
